Fabio Fernández and Tom Lauerman, two artists who have collaborated through the artists’ collective known as Telegraph, have created a new collaboration. “Sculptures in Love with Architecture,” or SiLwA for short, features a series of 74 diminutive but intriguing ceramic sculptures that are inspired by — you guessed it — architecture.

Fernández, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, works at the Society for Arts and Crafts and Lauerman, based in Chicago, divides his time between his artwork and teaching. The two artists initially met in graduate school at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and became familiar with each other’s work through Telegraph. “More often than not,” Fernández explained, “the work that Tom and I presented at Telegraph exhibitions shared an interest in craft, scale and architecture.”

Fernández had also become more interested in ceramics after participating in a ceramics residency at Lauerman’s studio. When Fernández was invited to exhibit at the architecture and design firm Sasaki Associates, Inc. in Watertown, Massachusetts, he invited Lauerman to join him. “We were both familiar with the work of John Hedjuk and particularly his book ‘Architectures in Love’ (Rizzoli, 1995),” Fernández said. “We decided that the title of our exhibition would riff off Hedjuk’s book and thus ‘Sculptures in Love’ with Architecture was born.”
