A visit to Albright Art Gallery in Concord, Massachusetts takes you
on “The Visual Journey” with the work of John Lobosco.
When I saw the color in some of Lobosco’s large geometric paintings, Josef
Albers instantly came to mind, so I asked Lobosco if Albers was an influence in
his work. “I have always liked Albers’ work,” he said. “I am sure he influenced
my work, particularly with regard to the speed in which your eye may move
from one field of color to another.” He did point out that he differs from
Albers because he strives to make each composition unique. “Geometric 4”
demonstrates bold marks of color on a life-size panel.
His large panels deal primarily with color and shape: big, bold gestures and
paint-filled brush strokes. But, his silkscreen prints have muted earth tones
and are textural with a painterly quality. The subdued color brings him to
a quiet, contemplative place. He has used high key colors for years and
often needs to take a break; he works back and forth, between painting and
printmaking, frequently.
